New publication: Cerioli and Warnecke-Berger (2025), Extractivism and International Studies

Our project director, Hannes Warnecke-Berger, and our postdoc researcher, Luíza Cerioli, have published a new article on extractivism and international studies in the Oxford Research Encyclopedia on International Studies, published by Oxford University Press in cooperation with the International Studies Association (ISA).

The article analyses extractivism as a persistent development model centred on raw material exports, profoundly shaping political, economic, and social structures in the Global South. It highlights how extractivist rents create structural dependence, resist transformation, and hinder inclusive growth. The article argues that extractivism must be central in international studies, especially in climate change and the global energy transition.
