Participation at the International Congress of the Latin American Studies Association (LASA) 2022 was presented at the 40th International Congress of the Latin American Studies Association (LASA), which happened online from Thursday 5th to Sunday 8th of May. The conference theme was “Social Environmental Polarization and rivalry between the great powers,” It included an extensive selection of researchers from many areas of the Social Sciences and Arts.

Our project coordinator, Dr. Hannes Warnecke-Berger, was the invited discussant on the panel “Transatlantic and Transpacific Migration to Latin America from World War II to the Cold War: rethinking the Global Migration Regime and Local Crisis.” Moreover, he participated in the panel “Extractivism, Rent, and Rentier Societies in Latin America” with our other two team members, Luiza Cerioli and Katrin Metzger. Luíza Cerioli presented a paper entitled “The interdependency between the international system and development plans within extractivist societies: Venezuela, Algeria, and Saudi Arabia,” in which she discussed the many interesting possibilities of comparing oil-producing countries that, at first glance, do not look comparable at all. Katrin Metzger introduced her Ph.D. research project via the paper “Between Persistence and Transformation: Intermediaries in extractive societies in Chile and Bolivia,” stressing the importance of exploring influential actors – whom she classifies as brokers – to grasp the socio-economic dynamics of extractivist societies in Bolivia and Chile. Finally, Hannes Warnecke-Berger presented his paper “Unequal Specialization through Sustainability? Rents and Deepening Extractivism in Latin America,” which calls attention to the dark sides of the sustainability discourse, still produced in the Global North and capable of maintaining or even deepening inequalities in the Global South.

Also presenting on the panel was Jan Ickler, from our partner CELA (Centre for Latin American Studies, Kassel University). The panel’s chair was Sebastian Huhn from Osnabrück University, and the invited discussant was Aaron Schneider from the University of Denver. Hannes Warnecke-Berger was the session organizer.
