The Merian Centre for Advanced Studies in the Maghreb (MECAM) will host a series of outreach events in Berlin, with a particular highlight being the annual MECAM Policy Talk on 27 June 2025. These events aim to engage policymakers, support evidence-based political decision-making, and foster sustainable and inclusive cooperation.
Coordinated by the German Institute for Global and Area Studies (GIGA) and in cooperation with the German Africa Foundation (DAS), this year’s Policy Talk will take the form of an interactive roundtable under the theme “Security, Migration, Economy: Enhancing Cooperation Between Germany, the Maghreb, and the Sahel Amid Shared Challenges”. The roundtable will convene international experts to explore the intricate interconnections between the Maghreb and Sahel regions and to identify new avenues for enhanced South-South-North cooperation. Key areas of focus include security and regional stability, mobility and migration, and economic and trade relations.
Youssef Cherif, currently an Extractivism Fellow at Philipps-Universität Marburg, will contribute his expertise to the roundtable discussions on 27 June. In addition, Youssef participates in a closed-door expert workshop on 26 June, speaking on the panel “Between Trade and Sustainability: New Opportunities for Economic Cooperation”.
MECAM is a Tunis-based centre for interdisciplinary research and academic exchange which promotes the internationalization of research in the humanities and social sciences across the Mediterranean. MECAM is closely associated as an academic project partner of Extractivism, with a productive partnership built on research cooperation, joint events, and international scholarly exchange. Both initiatives are funded by the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR) and are united in their commitment to open science and equitable scientific partnerships.
