2025 DKN Sustainability Science Summit

On February 21st, our Extractivism.de Team, represented by postdoc researcher Dr Luíza Cerioli, was at the DKN Sustainability Science Summit 2025: Advancing Sustainable Development in Berlin, Germany. The summit was part of the series of German Future Earth Summits organized by the German Committee Future Earth (DKN). With more than 250 participants from Germany and abroad, the DKN Summit worked as a platform to exchange new research findings in sustainability science.

The Extractivism.de Project was present at session 32: “Sustainability at the Origin: Mining as a Global Transformation Field”, chaired by Dr. Anna Schomberg from the Kassel Institute for Sustainability. The session explored how different perspectives and disciplines study mining and how it interlinks with sustainability practices and needs. There, our team presented the concept of extractivism as a development model and explained how essential it is to uncover the “dark sides of sustainability” within discussions concerning the global energy transition and its tendency to increase the extraction of new raw materials worldwide – and the many social, economic and political problems it comes with it.
