Lecture: “Brazil’s balancing act between extractivism and green industrialization”

On January 22, our postdoctoral researcher, Dr. Luíza Cerioli, gave a lecture entitled “Brazil’s balancing act between extractivism and green industrialization” as a part of the Lecture Series on Brazil organized by the Weltladen in Marburg.

The lecture contextualized how extractivism as a development model has been part of Brazilian history since colonization. It highlighted Brazil’s efforts to leave the extractivist path towards other development models. It discussed the advantages and disadvantages of the promised ” green path ” – against the backdrop of domestic political conflicts over the country’s economic and ecological future. The lecture was part of a series on Brazil (from October 2024 to February 2025) that aimed to counter reductive views about the country with new and diverse perspectives.

The Weltladen in Germany is a network of fair trade shops that promote ethically sourced products from the Global South. These spaces are typically run by non-profit organizations, cooperatives, or volunteer groups committed to fair trade principles, such as social justice, sustainability, and equitable trade relationships. They also serve as educational and advocacy organizations.
