Workshop: Research Methods and Strategies in the Context of Resource Conflicts in the Global South

Tuesday, May 21, 2024, 09:00 – 16:00
Centrum für Nah- und Mittelost-Studien, Deutschhausstraße 12, Raum 01A03
Phillips-Universität Marburg

Extractivism was originally coined as a political term by social movements in Latin America to denounce the exploitation of natural resources. In the 1990s, this term entered the scientific discourse. Research on extractivism has now spread far beyond the borders of Latin America and is discussed interdisciplinarily. This discussion not only addresses ecological issues of environmental destruction caused by resource extraction but also critically examines the scope of extractivism as a development model that shapes economic and political systems as well as entire societies.

To analyze research problems related to resource conflicts in the Global South, a well-founded theoretical and empirical research strategy is required that adequately considers the local research context. The Research Workshop on Extractivism is aimed at students and doctoral candidates who are dealing with questions of the social, political, economic, and socio-ecological causes and effects of resource conflicts in the Global South in their empirical work.

The lectures in the morning will provide insights into the theory and practice of research in the contexts of countries in the Global South. In the afternoon, final theses and dissertation projects addressing the topic will be presented, with feedback and tips for further development provided.
Participants who wish to present their work are requested to submit a brief outline of their projects and existing questions by May 15, 2024. Up to three active participants can be accepted. Participants without their own contribution are warmly invited to join the discussions and gather ideas for their theses.
