Biography

Dr. habil. Hannes Warnecke-Berger is a political scientist and director of the international research network EXTRACTIVISM.de at the University of Kassel. His research lies at the intersection of global political economy, societal transformation, and sustainability studies. He works on resource politics, extractivism, global inequalities, geopolitical change, and the political economy of energy and sustainability transitions.
His broader research interests include development theory, North–South relations, financialization, rent theory, migration, and transnational economies. A particular focus of his work is the social and political impact of contemporary global transformation processes, especially questions of uneven specialization, shifting global orders, and the contradictions of the green transition.
Previously, he was a researcher and principal investigator within the Collaborative Research Centre (SFB) 1199 “Processes of Spatialization under the Global Condition” at Leipzig University. He received his PhD from Leipzig University in 2016 with a dissertation on violence and political economy in Central America and the Caribbean. He studied political science, sociology, and law at Leipzig University and at Sciences Po Bordeaux.
Hannes Warnecke-Berger has extensive international research and teaching experience, including long-term field research in Latin America, the Caribbean, Southeast Asia, North and West Africa, Europe, and North America. He collaborates within numerous international research networks and regularly contributes to public debates on global transformation, sustainability, and the changing world economy.

Dr. habil. Hannes Warnecke-Berger is a political scientist and director of the international research network EXTRACTIVISM.de at the University of Kassel.
