Lucas Cifuentes Croquevielle is a researcher in labor and industrial relations, specializing in the lithium extractive industries in Chile. He holds a PhD in Business and Management from the University of Manchester. His doctoral research constitutes the first in-depth empirical study of labor regimes in Chile’s lithium industry, examining how the country’s peripheral insertion in the global battery supply chain shapes the organization of work, labor control, and industrial conflict. His current research extends this agenda comparatively to Argentina and to the labor dimension of port logistics in critical mineral supply chains, and also encompasses occupational health and work. He led a research project for IndustriALL Global Union on labor relations in lithium mining across Chile and Argentina.

CONTRIBUTION TO THE PROJECT

At Extractivism, Lucas Cifuentes examines the labor dimension of lithium extractivism in Chile and Argentina, a systematically neglected aspect of the energy transition. He analyzes how peripheral insertion in the battery supply chain shapes labor regimes at the extractive frontier, linking the geopolitics of critical minerals to the conditions under which work is organized and contested in extractivist territories.
