Extractivism Talks #07: “Natural Resources in the Global Path of Sustainability”
The Extractivism Talks series is a platform for timely discussions on international affairs and current events, exploring the connections between global uneven development and extractivist regimes. The series encourages complex, interdisciplinary discussions and unique insights about the conditions of domestic socio-economic development, environmental justice, and international integration, focusing on possibilities of change and continuity in the Global South.
The Extractivism Talks #07 presents a roundtable discussion on “Natural Resources in the Global Path of Sustainability” with different governance and institutional representatives to focus on the current and future perspectives on energy transition, decarbonisation and greening the economy. We bring together Ramón Pichs-Madruga, director of the Centre for World Economy Studies (CIEM) in Cuba and Vice-Chair of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), Constanze Veeh, European Commission’s Directorate General for Internal Market, Industry, Entrepreneurship and SMEs, Prof. Dr. Rachid Ouaissa holds the chair of Middle Eastern politics at the Center for Middle Eastern Studies at Philipps-University Marburg.

Shifting production and consumption patterns away from fossil fuels towards renewables and the growing importance of new strategic raw material resources like cobalt, lithium and rare has been quickly assuming a central role in the policy agendas of many countries. The COVID-19 pandemic and the Russian invasion of Ukraine have exposed the vulnerabilities in global supply chains, reinforcing the urgency of more sustainable patterns of production, trade, and consumption. This roundtable explores, through different local, regional, and international lenses, how the decarbonisation will trigger a profound transformation of current social-technological regimes, formal regulations and policies, institutions, connectivity grids, energy infrastructure and mindsets of production and consumption.

Ramón Pichs-Madruga
Ramón Pichs-Madruga is a Cuban climatologist and a researcher of the socio-economic aspects of environmental protection and sustainable development. He was elected one of the three IPCC Vice-Chairs in July 2023. He has been Director at the Centre for World Economy Studies (CIEM) in Cuba since 2013 and an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Economics at the University of Havana since 2004.
Constanze Veeh
Constanze Veeh works on raw materials policy in the European Commission’s Directorate General for Internal Market, Industry, Entrepreneurship and SMEs. Her work focuses on critical raw materials, foresight and monitoring.
Prof. Dr. Rachid Ouaissa
Prof. Dr. Rachid Ouaissa holds the chair of Middle Eastern Politics at the Center for Middle Eastern Studies (CNMS) at Philipps-University Marburg. His research and teaching focus is on North-South relations, the rise of fundamentalist movements, EU-Mediterranean policy, rentier economies and systems of rule in the Middle East and North Africa. He has many years of experience with collaborative projects and international cooperation. For example, he the project leader of the BMBF-funded research network “Re-Configurations: History, Memory and Transformation Processes in the Middle East and North Africa.” Since April 2021, he has been the German director of the Merian Center of Advanced Studies in the Maghreb (MECAM) in Tunis.
