Latin America’s new geopolitical constellation: actors, interests, conflicts Hofgeismarer Lateinamerikagespräche, 30.01.-02.02.2026

The world is changing: climate crisis, geopolitical rivalry between the US and China, and the EU seeking influence – all of these factors are shaping international relations. These tensions are particularly evident in Latin America: the US is imposing tariffs and focusing on migration, China has long been a key trading partner, and the EU is seeking access to raw materials through climate and energy partnerships.
Latin America is becoming a geopolitical hotspot in this game of spheres of influence. Conflicting foreign policy preferences are presenting many countries with enormous problems and forcing them to seek social, political, and economic compromises. Our conference will discuss the consequences of these geopolitical shifts for Latin America based on current dynamics and selected problem areas.
