Notre chercheuse, Dr. Luíza Cerioli, a récemment publié un article dans la revue Territory, Politics and Governance, une revue Q1 de premier plan en sciences politiques et en géographie. L’article est intitulé : « But we are a rich nation! »: the persistent extractivist development myth in Algeria and Venezuela. » Il s’appuie sur un travail de terrain approfondi mené dans les deux pays, financé par le Bundesministerium für Forschung, Technologie und Raumfahrt (BMFTR).
L’étude retrace une longue trajectoire historique de l’exploitation des hydrocarbures afin de conceptualiser le mythe du développement extractiviste comme un imaginaire social partagé, une croyance durable et adaptable qui associe l’abondance de ressources et le progrès socio-économique. Elle montre comment ce mythe a joué un rôle central dans la légitimation de l’autorité de l’État, l’élaboration des politiques publiques et la structuration des attentes sociales dans des contextes politiques, culturels et sociaux très différents.
Abstract: The global push for decarbonisation has intensified demand for critical raw materials, reinforcing long-standing narratives in the Global South that natural wealth guarantees national growth and development. This article conceptualises the extractivist development myth, an enduring, adaptable belief linking resource abundance to socio-economic gains and progress, and examines its operationalisation in Algeria and Venezuela. Based on fieldwork and through a transregional political economy approach, it shows how the myth has legitimised state authority, policymaking and public expectations. Despite constant diversification rhetoric, extractivist logics persist and are now reframed around ‘green’ resources. The article highlights, therefore, how national imaginaries sustain extractivist models, entrenching uneven development amid the energy transition
