Call for Papers: CfP EISA/EWIS Workshop

CfP EISA/EWIS Workshop “The Dark Side of Sustainability and Uneven Global Development: Interlinking IR, Area Studies and Development Research”

Extractivism.de hosts a workshop at the 9th European Workshops in International Studies from EISA, the European International Studies Association. The event is happening in Thessaloniki, from 6 to 9 July 2022 and the workshop convenors are Dr. Hannes Warnecke-Berger and Luíza Cerioli, respectively, the Extractivism.de’s project coordinator and Post-Doc researcher.

The workshop explores the idea that the sustainability discourse and practice today do not have an equal or equalizing design. Although sustainability is irrevocably entering the international political agenda, it does selectively. Despite aiming for social change, sustainability is still mainly concentrated in the Global North. Circular economies, recycling, e-mobility, and energy transitions are hypothesized and materialized mainly within developed countries and then projected to the rest of the world. Conversely, non-sustainable activities, particularly raw materials extraction and exportation, are still the most accessible path towards economic growth in the Global South. On the one hand, climate change pushes for rethinking the use and distribution of natural resources globally. On the other hand, the supply and access to such resources are uneven, translating into different development trajectories in the Global South, many that do not conform to expectations for a greener future.

Thus, the workshop proposes an interdisciplinary debate between International Relations, Development Studies, and Area Studies, constructing a space for building concepts concerning development trajectories and sustainability that link the international and the domestic. Bridging the gap between these fields can recalibrate them towards fruitful new arguments, concepts, and ideas, connecting theory, methods, and empirical knowledge into inter/trans-disciplinary discussions. Ultimately, the goal is to create a forum for de-Westernizing science and expand our knowledge about the dark side of sustainability as well as case-specific, regional and/or global trajectories of development.

Abstracts MUST be submitted electronically via the ConfTool submission system  by the given deadline 31 January 2022.
